Looking back to what I wore to school!!!

Posted 9/7/2010 7:45:00 AM
I have two teenage daughters and, like when I was a kid, they want the latest, greatest, hottest and coolest of everything. It caused me to think back to what I wanted when I was their age.

We didn't have Hollister or Abercrombie jeans, but we did have Sicily, Jordache and Calvin Kleins. Skinny jeans are really huge now, but we had parachute pants...remember all that nylon and zippers?

Air Jordans are back, but Nike was a very young company in the late 70s and early 80s and we wanted the Nike Cortez or Spotbuilt coaching shoes.

The kids all want those NorthFace jackets, but we wanted Member's Only. They cost about the same, too.

I was desperate for a Sony Walkman with a cassette player, but had to settle for radio only version. The cassette style was too expensive. I didn't have any clue as ...

I need my routine back!!!

Every August, I start getting a little anxious about going back to school. I'm 44 and haven't been in school since 1987, but I feel the anxiety. I need the routine back.

I don't know about your kids, but my kids actually crave the routine of getting up, going to school, coming home, going to soccer, having dinner, doing home work, etc. After two months off, they need that routine back.

I always disagreed with my wife about how important routine is. She and my youngest daughter always felt better when the set schedule of the school year was part of their lives. I and my oldest daughter liked the lazy, warm days of summer.

Well, maybe I'm getting older, wiser or both....but I'm ready for the routine to be back. Bring on Labor Day, Columbus Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas!!

Good luck getting back into your ...

I love country people!!!

It was great seeing everyone at the Festival last Saturday. I saw so many old friends. What I really love is that young people, old people, teens and families can have so much fun in one venue. It's pretty unusual. There's also a lot of respect for one another.

I remember being at a pop/rock concert one time and was very disturbed by the poor behavior of the attendees. There were fights, awful language and very little good behavior. The country shows are the opposite.

I remember about five years I had to leave during the early part of the show. People were still tailgating and I was parked in the middle of them. I figured there was no way I was going to be able to leave. Well, people picked up tents, moved coolers and even offered me a soda. They were awesome.

With so much negativity ...

One of my favorite spots in Boston and it's FREE!!!

Happy belated Father's Day to all the Dads out there.

I took a ride to Maine, visited with my Dad for a few hours, then came back. I got out the grille, sizzled up some steak and sausages, and headed with the family to the Rose Kennedy Greenway. The Greenway is the gorgeous stretch of beautifully landscaped earth that stretches from South Station to the Boston Garden. It's where the old central artery used to be.

The Greenway has beautiful grass and flowers, open parks and a carousel for kids. It also has a large water fountain park, where funnels of water shoot up into the air in rythmic fashion. The kids, and yes....I.....LOVE it. We parked at a meter, which was free, had our picnic on the Greenway, ran through the fountain (free) and grabbed an ice cream across the street at Emack and Bolio's. (OK..THAT was expensive...but ...

Summer when I was a kid!!!

As schools begin to let out for the summer and parents try to schedule their kids for the next 10 weeks, think back to when you were a kid.

Was there anything greater than summer vacation?

I'm 44 and when I was in school the month of June used to be a hot weather month. Temps would be in the 80s, although we couldn't wear shorts. By the time school let out in late June we were already in summer mode.

We used to go to the park for "park league" and play baseball, hockey, basketball, football, etc against the other parks in the city. If we didn't want to do that we'd go for a hike in the woods. Our parents had faith that we'd return when we were hungry or it got dark. We did have a couple of dimes in case we had to call home from ...
