Twitter, Facebook, MySpace (anyone?), blogs, texts...Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Social
networking is much like the tornado in the movie Wizard of Oz (from which I
lifted the Lions, tigers and bears quote- FYI and LOL). It has come into our
quiet little town and taken us all by storm. "I'll get you my pretty and your
little dog too!" My question is, what if I don't feel like being social? I don't
have a choice anymore, it's part of life. I have been a Facebook hold-out up
until about 2 weeks ago when I caved. Or the Wicked Witch of the West scooped me
up and forced me to social network. There were no flying monkeys, but I felt
scared. I felt like I was giving up something sacred. Privacy. I won't talk
about my exercise routine on FB (be my friend - Carolyn Kruse), I won't tell you
my deepest thoughts in 140 characters or less on Twitter. But I will be there,
plugging away (search kruser1025). I get it. It's something I should do because
it's 2010. But I must confess. I'm old school and much prefer a phone call ( 888
819 1025). I occasionally quite enjoy talking to humans. It's comforting to know
other life forms are out there who communicate through speech. I also appreciate
a well written letter (ckruse@wklb.com).
It's all about self promotion. I understand. It's every man for himself and
every woman for herself. And sometimes it's just keeping company or keeping up
to date. I have to say I find Twitter very helpful for getting the scoop on my
favorite country artists or for breaking news while I'm on the air. I may not
want to socialize with friends from 6th grade or hear about the latest meal a
co-worker ate, but I will use this technology for my own greater good, Hey, "if
happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow, why, oh why, can't I?"
