Red High Heel Club Makeup Tips

Main Street Chic, Part 2
by Laurie Gail

Here is the second and final part of our look at New England skin care lines. (You can read the first installment here.) I asked each company where they’re based, their signature product and/or their best seller, and what makes them so special!

Northwood Naturals gets its name from founder Kay Hoyt’s hometown of Northwood, New Hampshire. Northwood Naturals is also featured in Whole Foods and has been voted Best in Beauty in 2011 and 2012 by Applaud Women Magazine.

Northwood NaturalsThe Northwood Naturals signature product? Kay says it’s their Goat Milk Soap. “Our soap is made with Farm Fresh Raw Goat milk from a local farm. Goat's milk contains many healthy ingredients to nourish skin including vitamins A, C, E and some B vitamins, along with amino acids, citric acid, enzymes, unsaturated fatty acids and zinc.”

“Goat's milk,” Kay says, “also contains caprylic acid, making the soap an alkaline product with a low pH, very close to the pH level of human skin. This allows better delivery of moisture and nutrients from the soap and prevents dryness and other negative skin reactions. Additionally, goat's milk naturally contains lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (commonly used in skin rejuvenation products). Alpha hydroxy acid helps slough off dead skin cells, leaving smooth new cells at the surface. Glycerin is a by-product of soap making in the commercial soap manufacturing process. Glycerin is typically removed because it can be used for other skincare applications. We do not remove the glycerin from our goat's milk soap due to its skin-softening properties. Our soap also contains Organic Unrefined Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil and Palm Oils. Northwood Naturals Goat's milk soap does not contain harsh detergents or any additives such as alcohol, petroleum, colors, dyes and preservatives. This reduces the possibility of skin irritation and allergic reactions. Many people with eczema and other sensitive skin issues use our goat’s milk soap without any problems.”

Kay talks about what additionally makes them special. “Northwood Naturals’ product line was formulated to put nutrients back in the skin that a hectic lifestyle takes away. We offer a wide range of natural, organically-derived skin care products from head to toe. Every bar of soap, lotion, cream or spray is handcrafted on-site in Northwood, NH. We use certified organic ingredients, essential oils, and natural fragrance oils. You will never find Parabens, Phthalates, Mineral Oil, Alcohol, or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) in any of our products. We are also soy-free and our lip balm is gluten-free. We believe in supporting the local economy. We get our beeswax and raw honey for our lip balm, the raw goat milk for our soaps and the organic herbs used in our lotions and creams from local New England farms and suppliers.”

You can find Northwood Naturals soap and lotion online at, at Whole Foods, specialty stores, boutiques and, of course, at craft fairs. They post upcoming fairs on Facebook. Our products can also be found in the Farmer’s Almanac, Yankee Magazine, and Fresh Market.”

Arianna Skin Care is based in Medford, MA. Arianna Beauty was founded in 2007 by CEO Miri Torres. Born in Israel, Miri arrived in the United States when she was 22. Diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in high school, she had several chemotherapy treatments which drastically altered her weight and appearance. During that trying time, Miri found that her beauty and energy were restored through natural treatments, confidence from building her business and an overall healthy lifestyle.

Arianna Skin CareArianna Beauty now sells the products that Miri used in her own personal restoration. In the past six years, Miri has built a successful network of Arianna Skin Care stores in Boston, Martha’s Vineyard and Newport.

The Arianna signature products are the Ultra Rich Mineral Body Butter and Ultra Exfoliating Body Treatment. One Arianna customer favorite is the Skin Renewal Facial Peel. Safest for even the most sensitive skin, this all-natural peel brightens and cleanses.

What makes Arianna special? The brand is based on the belief that beauty and health come from the inside. Arianna skin care products are free of preservatives, dyes or fillers, and are never tested on animals. The full line of all-natural skin care is made with the restorative Dead Sea Mineral Skin Care that the CEO, Miri Torres, used in her own personal restoration following chemotherapy.

Urban Kitchen Handmade is based in Allston, MA. Helene Matteson is the owner and makes all of the products.

She says their signature product is the handmade soap. “Some of our most popular soaps are Satsuma Guava, Grapefruit Lemongrass, Oatmeal & Honey, and Lavender.”

A personal touch is what makes their products special. “All of our products are made by hand. We make our soaps in small batches using the cold process method of soap making. This method helps retain the natural glycerin in the soap. Made with at least 50% olive oil, our soaps are made to really nourish your skin. We also make a variety of handmade home and body products: soy candles, lip balm, body butters, natural room sprays and much more! We sell our soaps at craft shows and Farmer’s Markets throughout New England. They can also be purchased through Urban Kitchen’s online store.

A House of SudsA House of Suds is based in Boxford, MA. Jim & Laurie Borek came up with their business in 2008. They talk about their signature product: homemade partially-organic soaps. The environment and social awareness is what makes them special. “We use recycled packaging that produces flowers if you bury it, and recycled bags. We make soaps people ask for, medicinal, dry skin, dandruff, acne, herbs, essential oils, poison ivy itching, and bugs away. We also make moisturizing goat milk and olive oil. We believe in helping the environment and sustainability, of the earth and ourselves. We're truly committed to helping others’ welfare whether it be donating to local charities or to the victims of hurricane Sandy.”
