What Once Was Old Is You Again

In our day to day lives, we are constantly inundated with new products.  Fortunately, although technology and creativity advance, they still borrow the best from brands gone by.

Some brands, however, have stood the test of time.  Here are some examples of legendary products (and some newer favorites) that have solidified themselves in beauty history.

Rosebud SalveRosebud Salve was the first one to come to my mind.  Founded in 1892, the Rosebud Perfume Company set out to provide multi-usage, affordable products.  Rosebud Salve, still in its original retro packaging, soothes dry lips, dry elbows and knees, and helps with minor burns. Its updated sister is Rosebud Salve in a Tube. (Sephora)

MAC was founded in Toronto in 1984 and has been taking over the world ever since.  In 1989, Russian Red lipstick was born and immediately became a favorite of celebrities and tastemakers.  The shade that made MAC famous is also available in Tinted Lipglass. (

Photo Finish Foundation Primer has been one of the most popular primers out there for years. This Smashbox best seller won Best of Sephora Award for Best Primer, and is one of Marie Claire’s “25 Products That Will Change Your Life.”  The oil-free foundation primer can also be worn alone. (

MAC Russian RedBrands can be people, too. Taylor Swift is the latest face of COVERGIRL, bringing the legendary brand to a whole new generation.  COVERGIRL’s classic Clean Liquid Makeup, established in 1961, is available in Clean Liquid Makeup Normal, Oil Control, and Sensitive Skin. (Drugstores)

Great Lash Mascara by Maybelline lives up to its iconic tag as “America’s Favorite Mascara”.  In 1971, Maybelline introduced Great Lash in its now-instantly recognizable pink and green tube.  The 40-plus year old mascara has had some updates over the years--it’s available in washable and waterproof in a variety of shades, including clear. Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser is a light weight, creamy cleanser that gets the stamp of approval from many dermatologists.  Celebrity fans like Charlize Theron and Olivia Wilde like its no-fuss formula.  The cleanser launched in 1947 and is still going strong. (Drugstores)

Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant was created in 1930 by Elizabeth Arden to relieve dry skin and sooth redness. It quadruples up to groom brows and gloss lips.  Over the years it’s won over 40 global beauty awards.  Now, one of the most famous products in the world has a brand new fragrance free version.  (

Elasticizer, from Phillip Kingsley, is the first pre-shampoo treatment for hair. The cult favorite was launched 28 years ago.  Its claim to fame is restoring elasticity and strength without weighing hair down. (

30 year-old Prestige Cosmetics has two eyeliners that date back to the company’s beginnings.  Their affordable pencil and liquid eyeliners have stood the test of time and continue to be a best seller.  (

Merle Norman whipped up her signature product, Miracol, in her kitchen in 1931 and it’s going strong ever since. Miracol Revitalizing Lotion is her original exfoliating mask.  It exfoliates and removes oil without drying.  (
